What the Streamplayer does

What the Streamplayer does

Your amplifier and speakers already do the hard work. They turn a signal into sound, and they do it just as well today as they did decades ago. What became outdated was the source, the part that has always kept changing: from vinyl players to cassette players, radios, CDs and mp3 players.

The Streamplayer replaces that missing link, bringing your existing audio setup into the streaming era and also giving you the possibility to sync any speakers regardless of brand. Simply plug the small device into your amplifier or speakers and connect it to your home Wi-Fi using the Atonemo app, which is only needed for setup.

After that, listening works just as it already does. Open Spotify, Tidal or your preferred music app, select the Streamplayer and start listening through your sound system. There is no complicated new app to learn, no account to create and no subscription to pay.

The signal path

The signal path

Audio leaves through a single 3.5 mm port that works two ways, analogue and digital. As an analogue output it converts the stream and hands your amplifier a line-level signal. With a mini-Toslink cable it passes the digital signal straight through, so your own amplifier or converter does the conversion.

Audio is streamed over Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth, so there is no need to pair your devices. The music will not cut out when you leave the room or receive a call, and the audio is reproduced at the highest possible fidelity without Bluetooth compression.

Two limits are worth knowing. The Streamplayer is a source, not an amplifier, so passive speakers still need the amplifier they already have. And a dedicated high-end converter will give you more refinement than this does, at a considerably higher price.

Frequently asked questions

Question? We've got answers

  • Will it work with my 30-year-old stereo?

Yes. It works with any analogue input, whether AUX, RCA or DIN, as long as you have the right cable. It also works with a digital input over optical S/PDIF.

  • How do I know if my equipment is compatible?

Send a photo of the back of your amplifier or speaker to info@atonemo.com and we will tell you which input to use and which cable you need. If you would rather check yourself, look for a socket marked AUX, Line In, CD, Tape, RCA or Optical.

  • My amplifier only has RCA inputs. Will that work?

Yes. The Streamplayer has a 3.5 mm output, so you need a 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable or a small adapter. It is a cheap, widely available part, and worth having ready before delivery.

  • Can I plug it into the phono input?

No, use a line input instead. A phono input is built for the very low signal from a turntable and applies extra equalisation to it, so the sound would be distorted and far too loud. Any input marked AUX, Line In, CD or Tape is the right one.

  • My amplifier has a DIN socket. Does that work?

Yes, with the correct DIN cable, as long as that input takes a normal line-level signal. XLR and other analogue inputs can work the same way. Send us a photo if you are unsure which of your sockets to use.

  • Will it work with a soundbar?

Yes, if the soundbar has an analogue or optical input. If it only has HDMI, it will not work.

  • Can I use it with active or powered speakers?

Yes. Connect it to the line input on the powered speaker, the same way you would connect any other source. Studio monitors and most desktop speakers fall into this group.

  • Do passive speakers work?

Yes, through the amplifier they are already connected to. The Streamplayer is a source and not an amplifier, so it connects to an input on the amplifier rather than to the speakers themselves.

  • Can I connect a turntable to it?

No. The Streamplayer sends audio out to your system, it does not take audio in. Your turntable stays connected to the amplifier as it is now, and the Streamplayer simply uses a different input.

  • Should I use the analogue or the optical output?

Whichever your equipment supports. Both come out of the same 3.5 mm port. Analogue is the simplest choice and lets the Streamplayer handle the conversion. Optical, using a mini-Toslink cable, passes the digital signal on so your amplifier or a separate converter does that work instead.

  • What is in the box?

The Streamplayer, a 0.5 m 3.5 mm AUX cable, a 1.5 m USB-C cable and a quick-start guide. If your amplifier needs RCA, DIN or optical, that cable is not included.

  • Does it need a 5 GHz network?

No. It uses dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and works on either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, with WPA2 or WPA3 security.

  • Which music services can I use?

Any music service. The Streamplayer supports Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2 and Google Cast, so you can stream anything from YouTube and Apple Music to your favourite radio app.

  • Do I need to keep the app open all the time?

No. Once the Streamplayer is set up, you play through Spotify Connect, AirPlay, or Google Cast just like normal. The app is only needed for advanced settings.

  • Does it work with Apple HomeKit or Google Home?

Yes. You can group it and control it with Google smart speakers and HomePods.

  • What happens if the wifi goes down?

Spotify Connect and AirPlay keep playing the current track from the device's cache. When wifi comes back, the stream resumes automatically.

  • Do I need one for every room?

You need one for every system that is not already on your network. One Streamplayer serves one amplifier or one powered speaker, so a second stereo in another room needs its own.

  • Will two of them play in sync?

Yes. Group them through AirPlay 2 or Google Cast and they play the same thing at the same time. You can also send something different to each room when that suits you better.

  • How is it powered?

Over USB-C, at 5 V and 1 A, from any power block. The cable is included.

  • Do I lose any sound quality compared to a wired connection?

The Streamplayer plays up to 24-bit / 192 kHz, the highest resolution services like Tidal offer. That is well above a CD, which is 16-bit / 44.1 kHz.

  • Is the music compressed on the way to my amplifier?

No. The stream is not re-compressed, and playback runs up to 24-bit / 192 kHz. What you actually hear depends on the service and the recording as much as on the hardware.

  • Does it play gapless?

Yes. Albums that were recorded to run without pauses play that way.

  • Can I adjust the sound for my room?

Yes. The Atonemo app has a 10-band equaliser, which helps if a speaker sits close to a wall or the room is hard and reflective.

  • What do I do if something stops working?

There is a reset button on the side that returns the unit to its factory state, and firmware updates install themselves over the air. If that does not solve it, email info@atonemo.com.

  • Can I send it back if it doesn't work?

Absolutely. We offer 30 days, no questions asked. If it doesn't work with your setup, send it back and we'll refund everything.

I bought the Streamplayer because I wanted to stream music to my vintage stereo set, comprising of Philips FA-890 amplifier and Philips FB-815 speakers, amongst others. I had a pretty good bluetooth adapter connected but the quality was just not 100% and it was annoying having all my phones notifications and sounds playing on it too. So I got the Streamplayer, and it is a revelation. The installation was very easy and the sound quality is just a big step above using bluehtooth. I am streaming from YouTube Music but also I stream AAC and FLAC files stored on my phone ot the Streamplayer using Musicolet and HiFi-Cast apps. All methods work very well and the sound quality is excellent. I am a very happy customer!

The setup is easy and fast. I like that the device work with most streaming services. I have one problem with it. Often after I change some songs in a row with Google Cast the stream will stop all of a sudden. Sometimes I have to reconnect. This happens with different Google Cast services like YouTube Music etc. The sound is good with the digital and analog output. If the issues with Google Cast is resolved I will give the device a five star review.
